Bringing excavator machine control to a groundworks contractor

A forward-thinking groundworks contractor asked us to help introduce excavator machine control across several construction sites in North Wales. The aim: more efficiency, better accuracy and less reliance on traditional pegs and checks.

Fewer pegs. Faster digging. Less rework.

What the contractor wanted from machine control, and what the operators got.

Our involvement

We provided a complete support package, from the designers' data to calibrated machines and operators working with confidence.

  1. Liaise with the designers

Getting digital data in the right format for each site.

  2. Build the DTMs

An accurate 3D digital terrain model for each site's design.

  3. Set up and calibrate

Machine control set up and calibrated using GPS and local control.

  4. Guide on site

On-site guidance while the operators settled in.

  5. Keep supporting

    Ongoing technical support after go-live.

Why the model matters

Machine control is only as good as the model behind it. Before any file went to a machine, we checked the designers' drawings for missing levels and conflicts, built the surfaces and breaklines, and converted them to the right format for the contractor's system.

That's what lets an operator trust the screen and dig straight to level.

How we build machine control models

Outcomes

Machine control delivered clear benefits for the contractor.

  • Efficiency

    Faster progress with fewer stoppages.

  • Speed

    Quicker excavation and grading.

  • Safety

Fewer people needed on the ground near machinery.

  • Less waste

    Precise digging cut down rework.

  • Labour

    Operators worked with minimal guidance.
